A 'heart check-up' can mean very different things. Basic preventive risk assessment is not the same as diagnostic testing for chest pain, shortness of breath, arrhythmia or known heart disease. International patients should understand the purpose of each test rather than choosing a package simply because it contains more imaging.
What a basic preventive check-up looks for
Germany's federal health information portal describes the standard adult health check-up as a risk-focused examination that can include medical history, physical examination, blood pressure and laboratory testing. It is designed to identify cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors early.
- Personal and family medical history
- Blood pressure
- Physical examination
- Blood sugar and lipid testing when indicated by the program
- Assessment of cardiovascular risk factors
When cardiology tests are different from screening
Specialist cardiology departments may use ECG, long-term ECG, echocardiography, exercise testing, cardiac MRI, coronary imaging or other tests when there is a clinical indication. These tests answer specific diagnostic questions and should not automatically be treated as routine screening for every healthy traveler.
Before booking a private check-up package
Ask the clinic what clinical question each test is intended to answer and who reviews the results.
- Is this preventive screening or evaluation of an existing symptom?
- Which tests are included and which are optional?
- Will a cardiologist review the results with me?
- What happens if an abnormal result needs further testing?
- Can I send previous ECG, echo or imaging before travel to avoid duplication?
Symptoms should not wait for a travel check-up
A medical-tourism check-up is not an emergency service. New or severe chest pain, significant breathing difficulty, fainting or other potentially urgent symptoms require timely local medical assessment rather than waiting for a planned trip to Germany.
