Why an individual hospital estimate comes first
For international self-paying patients, a useful German quotation is normally prepared after the medical records have been reviewed and the responsible clinical team has defined the expected treatment. The estimate may require advance payment and can later change if the actual treatment episode differs from the original plan.

Autologous and allogeneic transplantation are different pathways
An autologous transplant uses the patient's own collected cells, whereas an allogeneic transplant requires a suitable donor and adds donor matching, graft-related risks and longer-term immune management. The exact transplant strategy is therefore one of the largest determinants of the treatment episode and its cost.
Major cost drivers
A transplant quotation should be read as a complete clinical episode rather than a single procedure fee.
- Pre-transplant disease and organ-function assessment
- Donor search, HLA testing and donor work-up for allogeneic transplantation
- Stem-cell collection or procurement
- Conditioning chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy
- Inpatient protective-isolation period
- Blood products, anti-infective medicines and supportive treatment
- Treatment of infections, graft-versus-host disease or other complications
- Intensive-care treatment if required
- Bone-marrow, blood and molecular response monitoring
- Frequent outpatient follow-up after discharge
The advance invoice is not the final financial ceiling
Ulm's International Patient Office explicitly states that additional treatment can trigger an additional advance invoice and that the final invoice is prepared after treatment. Overpayments are refunded, while a higher final invoice requires payment of the difference. This is particularly important for transplantation because complications can materially change the length and intensity of care.
Plan the post-discharge period before travelling
Allogeneic transplantation in particular can require prolonged specialist monitoring after discharge. International patients should ask how long they must remain near the center, which laboratory checks are required, what emergency access is needed and when follow-up can safely transfer to the home-country hematology team.
