The cause still matters after cirrhosis is diagnosed
The German federal health portal notes that cirrhosis can result from chronic liver inflammation and other long-term liver injury. A hepatology review should clarify the underlying cause because antiviral, metabolic, autoimmune or other cause-directed treatment may still change management.
Compensated and decompensated cirrhosis are different clinical situations
The federal health portal distinguishes compensated cirrhosis from decompensated disease with major complications such as ascites, variceal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy or liver failure. Patients with acute deterioration need timely local medical care rather than waiting for an international consultation.
A specialist review should stage both liver function and complications
Useful assessment may include laboratory results, ultrasound or elastography, cross-sectional imaging, endoscopy for portal-hypertension complications when indicated and review of previous admissions. The exact work-up depends on the cause and current condition.
- Recent liver blood tests, coagulation and kidney function
- Ultrasound, elastography, CT or MRI reports
- Endoscopy reports if varices or bleeding were assessed
- History of ascites, encephalopathy, infection or hospital admissions
- Cause of liver disease and previous treatment
- Current medicines including diuretics and other liver-related therapy
Transplant assessment is a separate regulated pathway
Advanced cirrhosis can eventually make liver transplantation relevant for selected patients, but transplantation in Germany follows separate medical and legal rules. A general international-patient consultation does not create access or priority for a donor organ. Use the dedicated transplantation guide before making travel or payment plans.
What to clarify with a German hepatology center
Ask whether the goal is diagnostic clarification, treatment optimization, management of complications or transplant-center assessment; whether the center can review records remotely first; and which part of follow-up must remain with the local treating team.
