Primary liver cancers include different diseases, and treatment decisions depend on tumor type, extent of disease, liver function, underlying liver disease and overall health. A specialized hepatobiliary review is therefore more useful than choosing a treatment by technology name alone.

Several specialties may be involved

The Heidelberg Liver Cancer Center describes interdisciplinary planning involving visceral surgery, oncology, gastroenterology, radiotherapy, pathology and diagnostic/interventional radiology. The center has been certified according to German Cancer Society criteria since 2024.

What to prepare for review

Liver-cancer assessment depends on both the tumor and the condition of the liver.

  • Contrast-enhanced CT or MRI and reports
  • Pathology when tissue diagnosis has been obtained
  • Liver-function and other recent laboratory results
  • Information about cirrhosis, hepatitis or other liver disease
  • Previous ablation, embolization, surgery or systemic treatment
  • Current medication list and general medical history

Treatment options are not interchangeable

Depending on the diagnosis and disease pattern, a center may discuss surgery, local ablation, interventional radiology, systemic therapy, radiotherapy or other strategies. The reason for choosing one approach should be explained in relation to the individual findings.

How to evaluate a German cancer center

Use verifiable quality signals rather than paid ranking labels. Disease-specific certification, multidisciplinary review, transparent official contact routes and continuity-of-care planning are more useful than a generic claim that one hospital is 'best'.

  • Check current disease-specific certification where available
  • Confirm access to multidisciplinary tumor-board review
  • Ask which records can be assessed before travel
  • Use the hospital's official international-patient channel
  • Request an individualized treatment and cost estimate before booking
