Germany publishes several official data sources that can help patients research hospitals more objectively. The Bundes-Klinik-Atlas, statutory hospital quality reports and disease-specific certification systems answer different questions. None of them can decide which hospital is best for an individual patient, but together they are more useful than an unexplained commercial ranking.

Start with the Bundes-Klinik-Atlas

The federal Bundes-Klinik-Atlas lets users search German hospitals by diseases, operations, locations and departments. It is useful for identifying hospitals that report activity in a relevant treatment area and for reviewing selected structural and quality information. Use it to build a shortlist, not to make a final medical decision from one number.

Understand what annual hospital quality reports contain

German hospitals covered by the statutory rules publish structured annual quality reports. The G-BA defines their content and publication process. They are an important primary data source, but publication occurs after the reporting year, so the figures are not real-time capacity data.

Certifications can be useful when they have transparent criteria, external review and a clearly defined clinical scope. The Bundes-Klinik-Atlas states that it displays certificates that have been assessed as meaningful by IQTIG. In oncology, the German Cancer Society operates disease-specific certified-center programs with defined requirements and audits. A certificate is a quality signal, not a guarantee of outcome or automatic proof that the center is appropriate for every patient.

For cancer, check the disease-specific center

The German Cancer Society certifies tumor-specific networks in which the specialties involved in cancer care work together. When researching oncology, check whether certification applies to the exact tumor type and current center, rather than relying only on a hospital-wide cancer label.
