Short answer: Children with cancer should be managed in specialist pediatric oncology programs because diagnosis, drug dosing, supportive care, surgery, radiotherapy and transplant decisions differ from adult oncology. A German center will usually need pathology, imaging, treatment history and current disease status before deciding whether it can offer a second opinion, further therapy or stem-cell transplantation.

The exact diagnosis and treatment phase matter

A newly diagnosed leukemia, relapsed solid tumor and post-transplant complication require very different pathways. The reviewing team needs to know the current disease status and what treatment has already been given.

Stem-cell transplantation is highly diagnosis-specific

Freiburg describes allogeneic stem-cell transplantation for selected high-risk or relapsed leukemia and lymphoma, bone-marrow failure, immunodeficiencies and some metabolic diseases. Transplant is not a generic escalation step and depends on diagnosis, disease status, donor options and the expected balance of benefit and risk.

Supportive and family care matter

Pediatric cancer treatment can involve prolonged admissions, infection risk, nutrition, school disruption and psychosocial strain. International families should ask about parent accommodation, interpreter support, infection precautions and how follow-up will continue at home.

These are not rankings or paid recommendations. Each center is included because its official website documents the relevant treatment or specialist program. Availability for an individual patient still requires medical review.
