A diagnostic second opinion can often start with existing records
If high-quality nerve-conduction studies and genetic results already exist, the German center may be able to review them before repeating tests. Ask whether existing electrophysiology is sufficient and which records should be translated or sent in advance.
- Neuromuscular specialist consultation
- Review of existing ENG/EMG studies
- Repeat nerve-conduction studies only when clinically useful
- Clinical phenotype and family-history assessment
- Review of previous genetic results and variant interpretation
Genetic testing cost depends on the diagnostic strategy
PMP22 copy-number testing, targeted testing and broader CMT gene panels are different laboratory pathways. The most efficient approach follows the phenotype, inheritance pattern and electrophysiology. Genetic counseling and interpretation may be separate from the laboratory fee.
Rehabilitation and orthotics are recurring functional costs
Long-term CMT care can include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, gait assessment, ankle-foot orthoses, hand aids and mobility devices. For an international patient, the useful question is which assessments should be completed in Germany and which therapy can be continued locally after the plan is established.
Orthopedic assessment is separate from routine neurology
Significant cavovarus deformity, claw toes or ankle instability may justify foot-and-ankle orthopedic review. Imaging, custom orthotics and any proposed reconstructive surgery require their own assessment and quotation. Surgery should not be treated as a routine CMT package.
Do not budget for immune therapy unless a separate diagnosis supports it
IVIG, corticosteroids and plasma exchange are not routine treatment for genetically confirmed CMT. If a center suspects superimposed CIDP or another acquired immune neuropathy, that becomes a different diagnostic and cost pathway and should be justified before treatment is priced.
Clinical-trial participation is different from buying treatment
CMT research programs may offer natural-history studies or clinical trials for selected genotypes. Participation criteria, travel reimbursement and study-provided interventions vary by protocol. A trial should not be represented as a commercially available cure or included in a routine treatment quote.
Send records before requesting a cost estimate
A more accurate staged estimate is possible when the center knows whether the main question is diagnosis, genetics, rehabilitation or orthopedic management.
- Neurology reports and symptom timeline
- All nerve-conduction and EMG reports
- Complete genetic reports
- Family history or pedigree if available
- Orthopedic reports and foot/ankle imaging if relevant
- Current orthotics and assistive devices
- Current physiotherapy/occupational-therapy plan
- The main goal of the German consultation
