Specialist diagnosis can be the first cost episode
Cluster headache is rare and can be confused with migraine, trigeminal neuralgia or another trigeminal autonomic headache. A German headache center may first review the attack pattern, neurological examination, previous imaging and medication history before changing treatment.
- Headache specialist consultation
- Review of attack diary
- Neurological examination
- Review of existing MRI/CT
- Additional imaging or tests only when clinically indicated
Oxygen treatment has equipment and supply costs
Cluster-headache oxygen is a home acute-treatment pathway rather than a one-time hospital procedure. Ask what equipment is required, how oxygen is supplied, whether the center can help with a prescription or local setup and how the plan will continue after returning home.
Fast-acting acute medicines create recurring costs
Subcutaneous or nasal/inhaled triptan formulations can be used repeatedly during active cluster periods. The budget therefore depends on attack frequency, formulation, local availability and cardiovascular suitability rather than on a single treatment visit.
Preventive therapy may require monitoring
Preventive medicines are prescribed according to the cluster pattern, comorbidities and prior response. Some pathways require repeated clinical or cardiac monitoring. Ask whether the estimate covers only the initial prescription or also follow-up and monitoring needed during dose adjustment.
Nerve blocks or refractory-disease review are separate episodes
Selected patients may be considered for bridging procedures such as occipital-nerve blocks or, rarely, multidisciplinary assessment of severe refractory chronic cluster headache. These should be quoted separately from routine outpatient headache management, and invasive procedures should not be treated as a guaranteed cure.
Send treatment history before asking for a quotation
The center can estimate the likely pathway more accurately when it knows how frequent the attacks are and what has already been tried.
- Cluster diary
- Acute medicines and response
- Oxygen history and equipment if already used
- Preventive medicines with dose, duration and monitoring
- Previous nerve blocks or other procedures
- MRI/CT reports if available
- The purpose of the inquiry: diagnosis review, acute-treatment setup, prevention optimisation or refractory chronic cluster assessment
