Polyneuropathy Treatment Cost in Germany: Nerve Tests, Labs & Cause-Specific Care

Understand why polyneuropathy treatment costs in Germany vary between specialist review, ENG/EMG, laboratory work-up, genetic testing, amyloid or immune-neuropathy evaluation, pain treatment and rehabilitation.

What usually shapes a German hospital estimate

The mix changes by diagnosis and hospital — it is not a fixed national package.

Short answer: There is no single package price for polyneuropathy treatment in Germany because polyneuropathy is a syndrome with many possible causes. A focused second opinion may involve only specialist review and existing records, while an unresolved case can require repeat nerve-conduction studies, EMG, laboratory testing, genetic assessment, amyloid or immune-neuropathy work-up and rehabilitation planning. Treatment costs then depend on the cause identified rather than on the symptom label alone.

Diagnostic clarification is often the main first cost episode

When the cause is unclear, the first German visit may focus on confirming the neuropathy pattern and deciding which additional tests are actually necessary. Ask whether the quotation includes specialist consultation, ENG/EMG and laboratory testing or whether these are billed separately.

  • Neuromuscular or peripheral-nerve specialist consultation
  • Motor and sensory nerve-conduction studies
  • EMG when clinically indicated
  • Targeted metabolic, nutritional, renal, liver and thyroid testing
  • Serum and urine immunofixation when indicated
  • Selected autoimmune, infectious or toxic-exposure testing

Genetic testing is a separate cost pathway

When hereditary neuropathy such as CMT/HMSN is suspected, the budget can include genetic counseling and targeted or panel-based testing. Broad genetic testing without a compatible clinical and electrophysiological phenotype may add cost without improving the diagnostic yield.

Amyloid neuropathy can require interdisciplinary testing

Suspected transthyretin or acquired amyloid neuropathy may involve neurology, cardiology, hematology and genetics. The estimate can therefore differ substantially from a routine distal symmetric polyneuropathy review. Ask the center which specialist consultations and imaging or laboratory studies are included.

Immune-neuropathy treatment should not be priced before diagnosis is secure

IVIG, SCIG, corticosteroids, plasma exchange or other immunotherapies are relevant only for selected immune-mediated neuropathies. If CIDP or another inflammatory neuropathy is suspected, the center may first repeat electrophysiology and supportive tests before offering a treatment estimate. Use the dedicated CIDP cost guide for that disease-specific pathway.

Chemotherapy-related neuropathy may involve oncology and pain services

When neuropathy is related to cancer treatment, costs may include neuro-oncology or neurology review, pain management, physiotherapy and coordination with the treating oncology team. The goal is usually symptom and function management plus treatment-toxicity review rather than a one-time curative procedure.

Rehabilitation and symptom control are recurring costs

Neuropathic pain medication, physiotherapy, orthotics, mobility aids and fall-prevention work can matter more to long-term function than repeating diagnostic tests. Clarify which parts can be continued locally after the German assessment.

Send complete records before requesting a quotation

A center can give a more useful staged estimate when it can see what has already been tested and what question remains unanswered.

  • Neurology reports and symptom timeline
  • All ENG/nerve-conduction and EMG reports
  • Existing laboratory and immunofixation results
  • Medication and toxin/chemotherapy exposure history
  • Family history and genetic results if available
  • MRI or nerve-ultrasound reports if performed
  • Current pain and rehabilitation treatments
  • The purpose of the inquiry: diagnosis clarification, hereditary/amyloid/immune work-up, treatment review or rehabilitation planning

Charité Berlin – Peripheral Neuropathy Specialist Pathways

Berlin · Charité documents specialist outpatient pathways for hereditary CMT/HMSN, immune-mediated polyneuropathies including CIDP and vasculitic/MGUS neuropathies, amyloid polyneuropathy and neurological complications of cancer treatment, allowing cause-specific review rather than a one-size-fits-all neuropathy approach.

University Medical Center Freiburg – Peripheral Nerve & Neurophysiology Services

Freiburg · Freiburg documents expertise in peripheral nerve disease, clinical neurophysiology with nerve-conduction studies and EMG, nerve and muscle ultrasound, neurological physiotherapy for polyneuropathy and a specialist clinic for inflammatory diseases of the peripheral nervous system.

Heidelberg University Hospital – Neuromuscular Outpatient Clinic

Heidelberg · Heidelberg publishes a dedicated polyneuropathy disease page and a detailed electrophysiology SOP for chronic distal-symmetric polyneuropathy, including ENG/EMG classification and targeted laboratory work-up for treatable causes. The neuromuscular service also supports advanced peripheral-nerve diagnostics and interdisciplinary review.
