How the hospital estimate is built
For international self-pay patients, a useful quotation should follow specialist review and a defined treatment plan. The preliminary estimate reflects the expected diagnostics, procedure and hospital services, while the final invoice can differ if the actual treatment episode changes.
- Specialist review before a useful quotation
- Defined procedure or treatment strategy
- Written preliminary estimate
- Advance payment when required by the hospital
- Additional services if the clinical plan changes
- Final settlement after the care delivered is known
The exact glaucoma procedure changes the quotation
University eye centers use several surgical strategies, and they should not be compared as if they were the same service.
- Laser procedures where clinically appropriate
- Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
- Trabeculectomy / filtering surgery
- Non-filtering procedures such as canal-based surgery
- Glaucoma drainage implants for selected complex eyes
- Combined cataract and glaucoma surgery when planned
Previous surgery and disease severity can increase complexity
The operative plan depends on glaucoma type, target intraocular pressure, optic-nerve damage, previous laser or surgery, conjunctival scarring and other eye disease. A quotation for a first minimally invasive procedure is therefore not comparable with complex revision or drainage-implant surgery.
Follow-up is part of the treatment episode
Glaucoma surgery can require repeated postoperative pressure checks, medication adjustment and sometimes additional interventions. Before travelling, ask how many early follow-up visits are assumed, how long the patient should remain near the center and when follow-up can transfer to the ophthalmologist at home.
- Pre-operative glaucoma diagnostics
- Exact operation and any implant or device
- Anesthesia arrangements
- Outpatient versus inpatient care
- Early postoperative examinations
- Medication changes
- Management of pressure that remains too high or becomes too low
Do not choose surgery by price before the procedure is defined
UKE describes a spectrum ranging from laser and minimally invasive procedures to classical filtering surgery and drainage implants. International patients should first understand which procedure the glaucoma team recommends and why; only then can hospital estimates be compared meaningfully.
