Cornea care pathwayCornea Treatment in Germany
Start with the corneal layer and diagnosis, then compare the appropriate treatment pathway. Keratoconus, endothelial failure and full-thickness corneal disease can require very different procedures, follow-up and travel planning.
Choose the pathway that matches the diagnosis
The aim is not to pick a procedure first. A cornea specialist should confirm which layer is affected, whether disease is progressing and whether surgery is necessary before an international treatment plan is built.
Keratoconus & cross-linking
Progressive ectasia may be assessed with topography or tomography and pachymetry. Cross-linking is intended to stabilize progression; advanced disease may require different visual rehabilitation or transplantation strategies.
Fuchs dystrophy & DMEK
Endothelial failure can cause corneal edema and blurred vision. DMEK selectively replaces the diseased endothelial layer in many suitable eyes; cataract planning may be staged or combined.
Corneal transplantation
DMEK, DSAEK, DALK and penetrating keratoplasty are not interchangeable. The appropriate technique depends on which corneal layers are diseased and on previous surgery, scarring and ocular-surface status.
Prepare the records a cornea center can actually use
Useful records often include a recent slit-lamp report, corneal topography or tomography, pachymetry, endothelial measurements when available, refraction and best-corrected visual acuity, prior eye-surgery reports and the current medication list.
Sudden eye pain, redness or rapid vision loss?
Do not wait for international travel planning. Seek urgent local ophthalmic assessment, especially with sudden vision loss, severe pain, a red eye, new flashes with many floaters or a curtain-like field defect.
