Retina care pathwayRetina Treatment in Germany
Start with urgency and the exact retinal diagnosis, then compare the appropriate medical or surgical pathway. Retinal detachment, retinal vascular occlusion, AMD, diabetic retinal disease and macular-interface disorders require very different timing, imaging, procedures and follow-up.
First decide whether this is urgent
New flashes, a sudden shower of floaters, a curtain or shadow in the visual field, or sudden major vision loss can signal a retinal tear, retinal detachment, retinal vascular occlusion or another time-sensitive eye problem. Seek urgent local ophthalmic assessment rather than waiting for an international appointment.
Choose the pathway that matches the diagnosis
The same symptom can arise from different retinal problems. A retina specialist should review the examination and imaging before a procedure or travel plan is chosen.
Retinal detachment
A retinal tear or detachment may require urgent laser or surgery. Timing is clinically important and should be decided locally without delaying care for medical travel.
Open treatment guide →Vitreoretinal surgery
Vitrectomy, retinal-detachment repair and other posterior-segment procedures are used for selected structural retinal problems after specialist assessment.
Open treatment guide →Age-related macular degeneration
AMD pathways differ between dry and neovascular disease and may involve OCT monitoring, intravitreal treatment or other specialist management depending on the phenotype.
Open treatment guide →Diabetic macular edema
DME is assessed with retinal examination and OCT. Treatment may involve intravitreal medication, laser in selected situations and control of the underlying diabetes and vascular risk factors.
Open treatment guide →Diabetic retinopathy
Management depends on disease stage, macular involvement and complications. Monitoring, injections, laser and vitreoretinal surgery can belong to different stages of the pathway.
Open treatment guide →Retinal vein occlusion
RVO can cause macular edema and ischemic complications. OCT, angiographic assessment and repeated intravitreal treatment may be relevant in selected patients.
Open treatment guide →Retinal artery occlusion
Sudden painless major vision loss can reflect retinal artery occlusion. This is an emergency pathway: urgent local ophthalmic and medical assessment should take priority over planned travel or routine international second-opinion timing.
Open treatment guide →Epiretinal membrane
An epiretinal membrane can be observed when symptoms are mild; surgery is generally considered only after symptoms, visual function and OCT findings are reviewed together.
Open treatment guide →Macular hole
Full-thickness macular hole is a structural macular problem. Vitrectomy with membrane peeling and intraocular gas may be considered after OCT-based specialist assessment.
Open treatment guide →Vitreomacular traction
Vitreomacular traction ranges from mild traction that can be monitored to symptomatic cases that may require a retina specialist to consider intervention.
Open treatment guide →Prepare retina records before requesting treatment abroad
Useful records commonly include recent OCT images, fundus photographs or wide-field imaging when available, fluorescein or OCT angiography if already performed, visual-acuity measurements, previous retinal procedure reports, current eye medications and a concise medical history.
